Our recording process

If you’ve never recorded in a studio before, the process can seem overwhelming and intimidating.

At Dogfood Studios, nothing could be further from the truth. We want you to feel comfortable at all stages of production and to come away from every experience with us feeling creatively energized.

Every project is different, but the same three basic stages are used in almost everything we do.

The recording process starts with pre-production, a vitally important (and often overlooked) stage.

During Pre-Production, Dogfood Studios will work with you to:

  • Define the goals of your project and ensure that the production team (us) and creative team (you) are in alignment with each other.
  • Establish a budget and timeline for the creation of the project.
  • Ensure that you’re completely prepared for the unique challenges of the recording process, including
    • Effective rehearsal practices.
    • Equipment set up and usage (for remote recording).
    • Setting expectations for the studio environment and the key differences between live performance and studio performance.

This is where the fun begins. Whether you’re recording remotely or tracking in our studio, we’re available to ensure you get the best possible results. This includes:

  • Getting you comfortable with the studio environment.
  • Setting up any and all required equipment for the session.
  • Coaching as necessary to ensure we’re able to capture your highest quality performance.
  • Ensuring that the session continues on schedule and within the scope of the project.

Once we’ve captured a performance that you’re happy with, it’s time to bring your music to life. This consists of three key stages:

  1. The mix itself, where our mix engineer will work to your specifications to create a final song suitable for your genre and audience.
  2. The revisions stage, where you provide your feedback and we tweak the track as necessary.
  3. Delivery, where we provide you with your final tracks. We provide two different tracks per song:
    • A “stream-ready” version that meets requirements for upload to the streaming platform of your choice.
    • An unmastered file that can be taken to a mastering engineer for specialized processing.

Questions

We’d be happy to help you find great musicians to play on your track, and our producer is an experienced session musician who’ll be happy to help you out on the day of the session.

No. Any material you have that can help us get an idea of the song is useful, but that can be anything from a quick phone recording onwards. It’s also great if you can provide us with reference tracks; songs which inspire you and whose production inspires you.

The single most important thing in any musical recording is the performance, and artists rarely perform at their best in high-pressure environments. We aim to create a friendly, relaxed and creative work environment to help ease any nerves or anxiety that you have about recording. Creating music is supposed to be fun, after all!

We’re happy to work with you no matter where you are in the world. As long as you’re able to record great takes with your home setup (and we can help coach you for that), we can take over for the mixing process.
